This 6″ chiseled slate step insert is one of those pieces that immediately sets a project apart. The hand-chiseled slate texture has a deep, natural look that gives concrete risers the appearance of real stone, with the kind of detail and relief that is hard to find anywhere else. It leaves behind a bold slate impression that feels authentic, rugged, and finished in a way plain formed concrete simply cannot match.
Designed to fit nominal 2″ x 6″ forms as expected, this insert is not a full 6 inches tall, it is sized to fit perfectly with nominally sized 6 inch lumber (5 1/2″). With up to 3/4″ of relief, it offers some of the heaviest texture available in this style, making it a great option when you want a riser that really stands out. The tapered ends help it blend nicely from piece to piece, and when used together the liners can be almost seamless. A little modeling clay works very well for touch-ups if you want an especially clean joint.
At approximately 8 feet long, this insert is easy to lightly caulk or tack to the outer form and can be reused many, many times. It can also be paired with a mild bump-up when a taller riser is needed, giving you a little extra flexibility without losing the look. The end result is a strong, realistic slate edge that brings premium detail to steps and other decorative concrete features.
